Analysis of 'The Secret Window' opening sequence
The opening sequence is taken from a psychological thriller called 'the secret window', directed by David Koepp, starting Johnny Depp.
It begins with a sound bridge that we hear before we know what it is. We find out this is the windscreen wipers which creates a repetitive and rather sinister atmosphere at the start.
The opening shot is a close-up of Johnny Depps face in a car which shows stress and anger, which shows that there is obviously something wrong. There is a voice over at the start which sounds like there is someone in the back of the car with him, the we realise that the voice is actually Johnny Depps thoughts in his head. At the same time the windscreen wipers are still going , which could represent his heart beat.
It is shot in a motel car park at night, it is snowing and looks cold and gloomy. There are long tracking and point of view shots of Johnny driving the car and going into the motel to get the keys. The motel door and the sign on the on the building is monochromatic as they are bright red which could connote danger or something bad. As he leaves the reception of the motel he is chased by what looks to be the owner who then shouts at him to come back but you cannot hear this. When he gets back into his car the windscreen wipers are still going and there is a long point of view shot showing him driving and getting out of the car.
When he enters the room his wife and another man are lying naked in bed together watching TV, which suggests she has been sleeping with this other man. At this point the diegetic sound disappears so you can't hear whats being shouted apart from when the man screams and very sinister music is played over everything as the motel owner runs in and the camera backwards tracks the scene and fades away into a scene of a lake.
This is then a long crane and tracking shot of the lake which then uses dissolve editing to go into the trees of the forest where there is an isolated cabin. Throughout this there is loud orchestral music being played which gives it a haunting effect. There is then a very long crane shot that goes through the trees, up through the window showing a high angle shot of the room, scans the work on the desk, goes over the banister and looks into a mirror showing Johnny laying on a sofa. This is a long shot which then carries on to pass through the mirror, this links into the title of 'The secret window'. At this point the music has stopped and its all quiet. You can see Johnny sleeping on the sofa with messy hair and torn clothes, this suggests that the character is depressed and not looking after himself.
